Featured Short Films inlcude:

Gila, produced by Trout Unlimited: Gila is about the importance of this special landscape in American conservation history, the people who protect it, and the recovery of the area’s namesake trout. It’s meant to highlight the incredible collaborative effort that has taken place since the Whitewater Baldy Fire of 2022 to keep this epic place wild.

Fly Fishing the Rio Grande with Nick Streit, produced by Gregg Flores, Where the River Runs: Nick Streit owns the Taos Fly Shop in Taos (www.taosflyshop.com) and is the co-owner of the Reel Life in Santa Fe. He and his family have a strong, multigenerational connection to the Rio Grande River. Their intimate knowledge of this special place and its spectacular trout is truly second to none. This short film showcases the kind of experience one might have on a guided trip with Nick or one of his talented guides. Fly fishing the Rio Grande at it’s finest. On a good day the Rio rivals any river in the Rockies.

Resilience-The Rise of Apache Trout, produced by Trout Unlimited: This film showcases how Apache trout have made a remarkable recovery under the stewardship of the White Mountain Apache tribe over the course of the last 50 years. The Apache trout is one of two Arizona native trout. The Apache trout was historically found in only 700 miles of the headwaters of the White, Black and Little Colorado rivers above 5,900 feet. At one point nearly extinct, Apache trout occupied only 30 miles of their historical range. Now, Apache trout occupy approximately 25 percent of their native habitat.

Reflect-A New Mexico Fishing Story by Gregg Flores: In this special film, Gregg shares one of his family’s favorite places to camp and fish in New Mexico - the Valle Vidal. His children have grownup and learned to fish here. His son, Caleb, first fished the Rio Costilla when he was a swaddled, four week old infant. Gregg’s twenty year history with this beautiful landscape, combined with dramatic hookups, amazing macro shots of trout and bugs, stunning aerial footage make this film a feast for the eyes.

Tom: The Friend Fish Deserve, produced by Patagonia Films: Shot along the majestic Babine River in central British Columbia, this intimate, heartfelt film captures the essence of fly fishing for wild steelhead and provides an insight into what motivates a motivator. Rivers and fish need friends. Tom Derry has spent a lifetime being that friend. Conservation and wild fish are two things found deep in Tom’s heart. As most people who know him will tell you, there’s no one in the world like Tom. He’s more than just example of how to live - he’s an inspiration for generations to come in protecting wild fish and giving back the ecosystems we cherish.

Ben Casarez Rod Builder, The Story of Flat Creek Rods, produced by Gregg Flores, Where the River Runs: Ben Casarez builds custom fiberglass fly rods at his workshop in Rio Rancho. We watch Ben craft a rod and listen as he shares the backstory about his work. Please visit: www.flatcreekrods.com to see more of Ben’s fine craftsmanship.

Il Pescatore Completo/The Complete Fisherman, produced by Patagonia Films: A homemade 15-foot cane rod, lines meticulously braided from the tail of a stallion, simple flies tied by hand without a vise -this is called Pesca alla Valsesiana. Originating on the small mountain streams of northern Italy, this simple, beautiful style of fishing has been practiced since the 16th century. Led by its elder statesman, Arturo Pugno, it is still practiced by a small number of devotees of those same streams, using the same materials and techniques employed since the beginning. It is fishing at it most basic and refined state, and it is only mastered by anglers Mr. Pugno calls the “the complete fisherman.” This film introduces us to this timeless angling technique, its enduring maestro and the special places where it is practiced with the same devotion and reverence as it was centuries ago.

Fly Fishing New Mexico with Norm Maktima, produced by Gregg Flores, Where the River Runs: Norm Maktima is a former world champion fly fisherman with Team USA and is now a coach for Team USA. He is also a professional guide and has personally designed a retail collection of fishing accessories, flies and apparel. His motto is, “Traditions of Pueblo culture in fly fishing.” Please visit his website: nmaktimaflyfishing.com. Many experienced anglers avoid the Rio Grande during the summer months due to high water temps and extremely unpredictable fishing conditions, but this doesn’t stop Norm from having a fantastic morning on the Rio Grande. This segment was filmed in just two and a half hours. Then we visit Norm's home waters on the Pecos. Finally, Norm takes us to the San Juan River where he brings some hawgs to the net.
